The role of the City Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for the investment of the City’s financial assets in accordance with the Investment Policy adopted by the City Council in compliance with legislative requirements. Various funding sources generate revenue which is collected to support operations. Much like a household or business might do, this money is placed in a variety of investments until it is needed. The Treasurer is essentially the caretaker of these funds and ensures they are invested wisely, in compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements. Trust is built with honesty and transparency. Therefore, it is the City’s policy to publish financial documents and make them available for public review. Monthly reports are provided to the City Council and City Manager which are also available for public review.
This is technical work and requires a level of specialized training most commonly obtained through advanced degrees in accounting, business or related fields. Additionally, years of professional experience in banking or finance including roles with decision making authority and supplemented by continuing education to stay abreast of market trends and regulatory changes.
